Vintage Ski Outfit: Leather Jacket, 1931

I love Aspen.  It was the destination of my first western ski trip when I was thirteen (a particularly impactful and formative experience for me); and as an adult, a town that I all-too-briefly called home.

This Snowmass print ad campaign from 1993 remains as vital and alluring today as it was twenty years ago.  In terms of design, I remember loving the commitment to landscape imagery, color both warm and cool, and fresh use of type.  But more than anything, it was the inspiration to ski in those mountains that made me file these pages away for safekeeping.  I feel the same looking at these now and know in another twenty years these beautiful and timeless images of Aspen will elicit the same response.

Christa Zechmeister: Teenage Slalom World Champion

Today, Mikaela Shiffrin graduated from Burke Mountain Academy.  The 2013 World Cup Slalom Champion graduated from high school.

When Mikaela unleashed her full-force assault on the World Cup ski circuit this past winter culminating in the slalom season title, she became the youngest slalom champion since Christa Zechmeister of Germany 39 years ago.  Here is a look at the 1974 slalom champion. . .

It is not very often than pretty German skier Christa Zechmeister, slalom world champion 1973/74, has leisure time for rowing at the Königslake, near Berchtesgaden (Bavaria) where she lives.  The 17 year old blonde girl, slalom star of the German national ski team, is even in summer busy, first of all with the training for the winter and then as a seller in a sportshop in her home town.  1974 press photo

Quebec Alpine Club: 1940

quebec alpine club girl laurentian mountain climb

6/6/1940:  QUEBEC ALPINE CLUB HOLDS SPRING OUTING. . . Claire Ferrier, President of the Club and one of the nerviest girls in Canada coming over the edge of a rock cliff on Mt. Baldy.

STE. MARGUERITE, QUEBEC. . . Canada’s only girl mountain climbing club, the Quebec Alpine Club, holds its first spring session, in the picturesque Laurentian mountain area.  The year’s first conquest was the precipitous cliffs of Mt. Baldy, 2,400 feet of sheer rock which they scaled in less than two hours.  Rubber soled shoes, a half inch rope, miner’s picks, and a strong constitution are all they use.  Dangling over a 200 foot sheer rock precipice is their greatest joy.  Winter months are spent keeping in shape by skiing down that sides of the mountains they climb in summer, at a mile a minute clip.  Press Photo:  Hamilton Wright

Franz Klammer: Team Austria Speed Suit

St. Moritz, Switzerland:  David Zwilling (center) first and Franz Klammer (r) second won the top honours for Austria in the men’s downhill race at the 23rd Alpine Ski World Championships here.  Willi Frommelt (left) from Liechtenstein created a big surprise by taking the third place among the world’s elite.  It was the second medal for this tiny principality.

I am totally into the banded sleeve stripes on the circa 1974 Austrian national team uniform, as worn here by Franz Klammer.  It is reserved design with big impact – creative and effective interpretation of Austria’s flag.

Shopping Munich: Globetrotter

The Globetrotter shop in Munich is a massive four floors of outdoor clothing and equipment presented with the most thorough, precise and functional merchandising I have ever seen.  This German specialty retailer aims to make shopping an experience – and they succeed.

A 360° tour can be viewed on the Globetrotter web site; this video provides a walking tour – both show off the gorgeous fixtures and unique features of this store.  I strongly recommend a stop at Globetrotter to shop the wide selection of premium outdoor brands or just for inspiration.

Ça Fait du Bien, le Soleil!

vintage ski summer sun bandeau top12/27/1936 press photo:  Oh!  Wie Schön die Sonne ist!

There is no denying summer is here – with temps nearing 100°, the sun was way too hot for me today!  But the sun is good in these vintage photos of this lovely skier on snow in her pretty (and daring) bandeau top.  What a chic summer ski ensemble!
