Moncler: Mountain Heritage Vs. Fashion

While combing through the thick fall fashion magazines, I was thrilled to come across new Moncler print ads that actually represent an alpine setting!

Although luxury and fashion are certainly nothing new to Moncler — arguably as much of the brand’s identity as function — the repositioning of the label in recent history has diverged from why I relate to the brand.  Celebrity collaborations, flash mob fashion shows and Bruce Weber ad campaigns of golden retrievers leave me cold and do little to reinforce the brand’s distinguished mountain heritage.  The reality:  Moncler has changed from a luxury sport brand to a luxury fashion brand.

I love Moncler not just for the finest quality goose down garments – but because the brand was born in the mountains and of adventure.  Founded in 1952 in France, Moncler manufactured tents and sleeping bags which led to the creation of the duvet (down) parka.  These innovative new garments outfitted mountain climbers for expeditions, evolved further into ski-specific outerwear and a trademark style inevitably resulted.

With the purchase of Moncler by businessman Remo Ruffini in 2003, positioning of the brand has transformed to court the fashionable elite more so than the luxury-minded athlete.  New urban retail outposts have fed this strategy.  Demand and business appear to be on the rise, an IPO is in the works – cementing this trendier direction.

I will do my best to filter through the fashion overload to keep my relationship with Moncler one of a little luxury, a lot of utility and always the mountains.

Alpine Icon: Barbi Henneberger

Barbara-Maria “Barbi” Henneberger was a ski racer from West Germany and based on any photo I have ever seen, a true alpine style icon.  Highlights of her racing career include a bronze medal in slalom at the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics; four medals at the 1962 World Winter University Games; and two wins and a second place at the 1963 U.S. Alpine Championships.  Tragically, she was killed in April 1964 by an avalanche while filming a ski movie in Switzerland for her fiancé, Willy Bogner, Jr.  While treasure hunting in Germany, I uncovered these gorgeous vintage photos of Barbi showing her at her most vital and beautiful.

Tracht: Original Alpine Style

vintage photo bad ausee austria couple weddingIs this a wedding photo?  Or just a portrait of an affluent couple?  From Bad Aussee in the Styria region of Austria.

Traditional costume characteristic of mountainous Bavaria and Tyrol often serves as the iconic foundation for contemporary alpine-specific style and is responsible for endless beloved motifs.  Tracht signifies region (such as Berchtesgaden), community (most often rural), economic standing and occasion (holiday, mourning).  I remain in awe of the artistic nature and exquisite handicraft involved in this garb.

Most of these images are found vintage photos – I would love to know country and region of origin.  If anyone has knowledge of this topic – please share with a comment.

Ashley Rankin is a woman who makes things happen.  A lifelong Colorado mountain girl and avid mountain biker dissatisfied with women’s performance apparel – she created Shredly to put an end to big, baggy and boring and ushered in flattering, functional and fun bike clothing.

As a devout user from the launch of the brand, I can tell you Shredly makes riding even more fun! The short fabric is lightweight and breathable with stretch for mobility while being rugged, durable and surprisingly mud-stain resistant.  Thoughtful features like adjustable waistband, thigh vents and slim cargo pocket with blinged-out faux-crystal snap put the shorts over the top.

As for the separate inner liner, the Shredly YOGACHAM puts an end to hot and awkward diaper-like chamois.  There is just enough padding – but not too much – in all the right places and a low-rise waistband inspired by yoga pants for comfort.

The bottom (no pun!) line is that I feel great in my shorts — the fit, function and comfort help me ride longer; style that is fun but also a little badass makes me happy – so I like to believe that Shredly helps me ride a little better!  Check shredly.com for the full story and product range, including jerseys.  And as Shredly says:  Look Good.  Feel Good.  Shred Good.

Shopping Munich: Sport Schuster

sporthaus schuster marienplatz munich germany

Celebrating 100 years, Sporthaus Schuster opened in 1913 as a sport specialty shop for mountaineers and skiers.  Located in the heart of Munich, the enormous 5,000 square meter / 5-floor store offers all that is good to buy for outdoor sports.

With top-notch merchandising that is both clean and cozy, I love how much energy and vitality Schuster gives to the sale of outdoor gear.  This is not, by any means, a traditional, sleepy outfitter.  In addition to offering all the usual leading brands, the primary value of Schuster shopping is access to European specialty brands not readily available in the US:  Peak Performance, Maloja, Houdini, Eisbar, Dynafit, and so many more.

Check the top floor for a chapter of Deutscher Alpenverein (DAV), the Bavarian mountain club, helpful with educated staff, maps and info.  Don’t miss the Gustl store-in-store on the main level featuring contemporary souvenirs celebrating Bavarian heritage.  And you won’t be able to miss the 25-meter climbing wall running the height of the shop.

I get a little bit fanatical about this place, so for me it is my first shopping stop in Munich.  I allow two or more hours and to be honest, usually have a chaser visit to go back for additional items.  At any rate, if you are in Munich do yourself a favor and stop in Schuster!
