I love when a found vintage photo leads to learning something new and unexpected. In this instance, the photographer of this fabulous 1930’s image is an interesting revelation. Lothar Rübelt (1901-1990) was an acclaimed professional photographer from Vienna, Austria known for sports photography and photojournalism. His own athletic background was accomplished as a member of the 1920 Austrian Olympic team for short-distance running.
Rübelt’s sport photography included a focus on stills but ranged to film with motorcycle and ski movies to his credit. I will have to dig deeper for the ski films but fortunately we can watch his 1924 motorcycle movie on YouTube. In Motocicletta Sulle Dolomiti is a glorious and exciting two-wheeled exploration of the Dolomites. This adventurous (off) road trip by Rübelt and his brother ascends to 2588 meters. Definitely check it out, even if you scan through the 46 minutes. At the least, jump to 37:16 for a thrilling mountain ride!
To escape from the humdrum daily round, to enjoy the beauties of nature and the open air, to roam far away across the frontiers. . . That is the dream of young and old! A dream which can come true for everyone, however, even without a well-filled purse and plenty of time to spare. No matter how short your vacation may be, you can have a wonderful trip by using the finest of all vehicles for tourist travel: the bicycle.
Vintage travel brochure from the Netherlands National Tourist Office. (Thank you to my husband for treasure hunting this gem!)
Is anyone headed to Mt. Hood in Oregon, the Southern Hemisphere or another destination for summer skiing?
Today I am headed to Colorado for a proper vacation with my husband. I am primed for spring skiing in the order of sun and balmy temps – but the forecast tells of fresh snow for the Rocky Mountains, adding to what by all accounts has been an epic season. Winter in April.
The next week will bring lots of skiing but likely very little blogging. Follow alpinestyle56 on Instagram for updates.
It’s that time of year again. Maple sugaring activities are underway in the north country, especially in Vermont – the Green Mountain state produces the most maple syrup in the nation. On March 22 and 23, more than eighty farms will open their sugarhouses to the public for the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers Association’s annual open house weekend. Click here for details to plan a sweet little excursion.
If you are too busy skiing next weekend, hold out until April 5 and 6 to enjoy maple syrup on snow at Stowe’s famous Sugar Slalom race celebration.
Way too much to post on this blog and way too little time! Not only am I backlogged with news from winter 2014, I am traveling for the next two weeks and expect to have an influx of inspiration to share from Austria and Germany – even despite the utter lack of snow in these parts. My blogging may be lagging but fortunately my ‘gramming is not. Please follow AlpineStyle56 on Instagram or monitor the feed on the right sidebar of the blog homepage for new images and frequent updates. (Clicking an image in the Instagram blog feed will bring it to full size.) Go check right now! Several updates from Salzburg, Austria. . .
