Ascutney: Vermont 50
Today my husband and I are headed to Ascutney, Vermont for the 20th annual Vermont 50 Mountain Bike Race or Ultra-Run. So happy that the weather is looking really nice for a really long bike ride!
I found this vintage patch for the Little Ascutney Snowmobile Club at a flea market a few months ago. The patch is large (6”), features a flocked fisher cat mascot and shows wear of riding many miles stitched to a snowmobile suit – it’s fantastic!
Like the VAST trails snowmobilers travel in winter, the fifty-mile course of the VT50 is made possible only with generous access to private land. Thank you, landowners!

Native American Gloves
x
These gloves are believed to be Athabascan (Athabaskan) from western Canada.
The smaller gloves are sized for a child.
I just can’t get enough of these vintage Native American gloves seen recently at antique fairs. I have never felt anything like the buttery softness of the leather and fur and delight in the pretty beadwork. The combination of artistry and utility produced a remarkable result.
Certainly gloves like this serve as inspiration for Astis and I am looking forward to ski days in my cozy mitts this winter. Click to check out the new Astis models for Winter 2013/14.

Weekend Treasures
I hit a small local antique fair over the weekend and managed to score a few solid finds. It is a very big treasure hunting week with the final Brimfield show of 2013 starting today.
I try to keep my collection exclusively ski or winter images but this vintage bike photo is too good to have left behind.
Gorgeous Native American leather gloves with beadwork. Too pricey to buy but a happy reminder that in just a few months I will be skiing in my Astis mitts!
I can’t recall ever coming across any vintage memorabilia from University of Vermont, my alma mater. This 1950-60’s flocked pennant is a beauty with the badass Catamount mascot.
Real photo postcard of the Smuggler’s Notch T-Bar at Stowe, Vermont. I have been looking for this specific image to add to my Richardson collection! Photo by Harry Wendell Richardson of Newport, Vermont.
I love the vibrant color of vintage Photochrome postcards. This one was produced by the Union Pacific Railroad – such great composition.

Treasure Hunting: Elephant’s Trunk

One good thing about residing in the Nutmeg State is proximity to both Brimfield and the reliable Elephant’s Trunk flea market. Sunday’s visit turned up an assortment of small items. These Italy travel brochures from the late 1930’s were definitely the find of the day! Gorgeous illustrated covers in rich colors and large magazine format should I decide to frame. As always, happy to find images that I have not seen before.

The first Brimfield Antique Show of the year didn’t feel particularly rich with alpine artifacts – but was great fun nonetheless. I rounded up some of the usual small finds: vintage photos, postcards, magazines.
The score of the day was a late 1930’s brochure for The New Haven Railroad Snow Trains illustrated by famed artist Sascha Maurer. (Maurer is best known for ski posters and credited with creating the Stowe “flying S” logo.) The brochure is in pristine condition with vibrant color and essentially gives me two mini posters – I am thrilled!
See you in September, Brimfield. . .
