Burke is a ski racing hill. Lucky for me, I love all that goes along with that – including ski racing fashion. Spyder Julia Mancuso race suit featuring trail map graphics of Squaw Valley, her home mountain.

Native American Gloves
x
These gloves are believed to be Athabascan (Athabaskan) from western Canada.
The smaller gloves are sized for a child.
I just can’t get enough of these vintage Native American gloves seen recently at antique fairs. I have never felt anything like the buttery softness of the leather and fur and delight in the pretty beadwork. The combination of artistry and utility produced a remarkable result.
Certainly gloves like this serve as inspiration for Astis and I am looking forward to ski days in my cozy mitts this winter. Click to check out the new Astis models for Winter 2013/14.

Weekend Treasures
I hit a small local antique fair over the weekend and managed to score a few solid finds. It is a very big treasure hunting week with the final Brimfield show of 2013 starting today.
I try to keep my collection exclusively ski or winter images but this vintage bike photo is too good to have left behind.
Gorgeous Native American leather gloves with beadwork. Too pricey to buy but a happy reminder that in just a few months I will be skiing in my Astis mitts!
I can’t recall ever coming across any vintage memorabilia from University of Vermont, my alma mater. This 1950-60’s flocked pennant is a beauty with the badass Catamount mascot.
Real photo postcard of the Smuggler’s Notch T-Bar at Stowe, Vermont. I have been looking for this specific image to add to my Richardson collection! Photo by Harry Wendell Richardson of Newport, Vermont.
I love the vibrant color of vintage Photochrome postcards. This one was produced by the Union Pacific Railroad – such great composition.

Support Team Icelantic: Eye of the Condor III
Or more precisely, help support the women of Icelantic skis – The Icey Ladies.
The Eye of the Condor is a unique competition in La Parva, Chile that combines freeskiing, photography and filming. Teams of six (filmer + photographer + four skiers) have five days to create video and photo submissions.
Team Icelantic won the film portion of the contest last year and are using Kickstarter to raise funds to defend their title in the 2013 contest next month. You can get involved for as little as ten bucks and feel good about supporting skiing, art and a kick-ass team of women!
Here is the link to the Kickstarter project that includes the winning 2012 video:

Astis Mittens at Stowe
Astis Mittens as seen at the 73rd annual Stowe Sugar Slalom.
Astis Bering mittens worn with Bogner. I am totally loving this dynamic pairing of black and white mitts against the candy-bright parka. It is just the right amount “off” to look original, personalized and cool — and each piece makes the other pop. The Bering’s are my #1 choice for my next pair of Astis!
Designer Poppy Gall wears the Sacagawea mittens. Though Native American-inspired, this pretty floral design also brings Eastern European influences to my mind.
See my Astis Erling mittens with beaded eagles (that I prefer to refer to as thunderbirds).

Astis Mittens
Astis Erling long-cuff mittens named after modern-day Norwegian polar explorer, Erling Kagge.

These mitts arrived for me today! I first saw Astis handmade mittens last winter in Deer Valley and was smitten. After seeing them in action on Kaylin Richardson this fall in Warren Miller’s Flow State movie, there was no putting off the inevitable.
Astis mittens are inspired by Native American handicraft, specifically the leather and beadwork of the Cree Indians. Astis is the Cree word for mitten! All mittens are hand-stitched and beaded in the USA using the finest natural and performance materials. Though it is going to take a lot to get me out of my Hestra Ski Cross gloves, I am excited to ski with the gorgeous beading and fringe!
