Mikaela – Sending You Good Luck!
3/16/13 UPDATE : She won! Photo: GEPA via skiracing.com
Photos (above and below) from 2/16/13 Alpine World Championships Slalom in Schladming, Austria. Hopefully, instead of flowers, Mikaela will soon be accepting a glass globe!
Tomorrow morning I will be anxiously monitoring World Cup Finals race results on my FIS mobile app – waiting to see if Mikaela Shiffrin will battle back to regain her top standing in slalom to win the season title. After losing her 33-point lead last week in the Ofterschwang slalom, she now trails Overall Champion Tina Maze by a mere seven points.
Today in Lenzerheide, Mikaela was awarded the Longines Rising Star award – recognizing her as the top young female racer of the 2013 season. Alexis Pinturault of France was the very deserving men’s recipient. Congratulations!

FIS Alpine Ski World Championships, Schladming 2013: Women’s Slalom, Mikaela Shiffrin Wins!
Yes, there were other women in this slalom race but all I’m really caring about is Mikaela Shiffrin. World Champion. At seventeen. Totally amazing (though not surprising) and completely awesome!
CONGRATULATIONS, Mikaela!

Marcel Hirscher of Austria, 2nd place. Ted Ligety of USA, 1st place. Manfred Moelgg of Italy, 3rd place.
I love how they announced the start of Ted’s runs with “It’s Ligety time”. Yes, it was. It is. Not since Jean-Claude Killy in 1968 – 45 years ago – has there been a triple world champion — incredible. Congratulations, Ted!

U.S. Women’s Alpine Ski Team Uniforms

Laurenne Ross adding style with a pretty neck gaiter and gloves.
It is all about the pink polka dot jackets! The vibrant color has moxie – it is both sweet and bold; the subtle pattern is enough but not too much; the silhouette is cozy and relaxed yet flattering, perfect over speed suits.
The U.S. uniforms appear to have a broad range of garments and looks within the annual kit, and are creatively reimagined year-to-year, not bound to traditional red/ white/ blue Americana. As a designer, I would be interested to learn about the inspiration and athlete input that determines the creative direction, as well as see how all the pieces merchandise into a cohesive uniform system.

Mikaela Shiffrin: Outside Magazine
What a pleasant surprise to open up the new Outside magazine and find a piece on Mikaela Shiffrin. The article is a nice primer on the ski racing phenom I call Magic Girl. The gorgeous photos by Chloe Crespi were shot near Burke Mountain Academy in East Burke, Vermont.
