Mother’s Day: Give Mom a Break

vintage ski saalbach austria zell am see mom kids church kirche

This image is of a very tiny vintage snapshot from Saalbach, Austria in 1938. I did not realize until I scanned and enlarged it – that it is an amusingly realistic (and timeless) capture. Unlike the idyllic happy poses generally feigned for photos – you see that Mom is all done with her sons’ nonsense! I am not a mother but imagine I, too, would often have this look on my face. Anyway, this revelation made me laugh. Be extra nice to your mom today!

FIS World Cup: Wengen

Okay, enough bunnies and cute stuff! It’s time to get serious – a weekend of men’s World Cup ski racing at Wengen, Switzerland is upon us. Friday kicks it all off with the Combined followed by Slalom Saturday and the classic Lauberhorn downhill on Sunday. Reposting a favorite vintage photo to celebrate the venerable tour stop.

This is the week when summer ends, just a little bit too soon, regardless of calendar and weather — local schools are back in session.  I have stacks of summer alpine images waiting to be shared and will try my best to work in a few more seasonal posts before it is undeniably autumn.

Slope Style: by Lothar Rübelt

vintage photo lothar rubelt ski model snow fashion vienna austria

I love when a found vintage photo leads to learning something new and unexpected.  In this instance, the photographer of this fabulous 1930’s image is an interesting revelation. Lothar Rübelt (1901-1990) was an acclaimed professional photographer from Vienna, Austria known for sports photography and photojournalism.  His own athletic background was accomplished as a member of the 1920 Austrian Olympic team for short-distance running.

Rübelt’s sport photography included a focus on stills but ranged to film with motorcycle and ski movies to his credit.  I will have to dig deeper for the ski films but fortunately we can watch his 1924 motorcycle movie on YouTube.  In Motocicletta Sulle Dolomiti is a glorious and exciting two-wheeled exploration of the Dolomites.  This adventurous (off) road trip by Rübelt and his brother ascends to 2588 meters.  Definitely check it out, even if you scan through the 46 minutes.  At the least, jump to 37:16 for a thrilling mountain ride!

100 Years: Fieberbrunn Ski Racing Club

fieberbrunn austria tyrol tirol ski team vintage postcard 1914This real photo postcard found in Innsbruck is from 1914, making it one of the older images in my collection.  To the best of my understanding, this is a ski racing club from Fierberbrunn in the Tyrol region of Austria.

The armbands are curious to me and I am wondering if they are athletic in nature or have something to do with the onset of World War I?  Does anyone have any knowledge or thoughts?

Stowe: Ski Racing Heritage

Ski racing runs deep in Stowe, Vermont.  Every level of alpine racing has graced the slopes of Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak from international championships to the beloved Sugar Slalom.  The Mount Mansfield Ski Club, the oldest ski club in the country, has assembled a detailed history and timeline of racing in Stowe.  Please click here for the MMSC website.

Sochi 2014: Women’s Slalom

I am particularly excited for (and anxious about) the women’s Olympic slalom race – mostly due to Mikaela Shiffrin and the very realistic chance that she could win Olympic gold.  Thankfully, this is a night race in Russia which means we in the USA can easily catch the first run live in the morning (7:45 am EST) – only hours away.  Now it’s just that pesky 11:00 am meeting I have to do something about.  Don’t think I can bear to miss the conclusive second run. . .
