I had a couple of great Shredly sightings this past weekend while riding Kingdom Trails.  Thanks to Village Sport Shop’s dedication to women’s product, the Lyndonville, Vermont specialty retailer is one of the first on the East coast to carry Shredly women’s mountain bike apparel.

I could easily take a picture of something gorgeous or otherwise charming every other minute while mountain biking Kingdom Trails in East Burke, Vermont.  But the trails flow so nicely – it’s too hard to stop!  I managed to sneak in a few shots from an absolutely perfect summer weekend.  As always, Kingdom Trails gets my highest recommendation as a stellar riding destination and experience!

Christa Zechmeister: Teenage Slalom World Champion

Today, Mikaela Shiffrin graduated from Burke Mountain Academy.  The 2013 World Cup Slalom Champion graduated from high school.

When Mikaela unleashed her full-force assault on the World Cup ski circuit this past winter culminating in the slalom season title, she became the youngest slalom champion since Christa Zechmeister of Germany 39 years ago.  Here is a look at the 1974 slalom champion. . .

It is not very often than pretty German skier Christa Zechmeister, slalom world champion 1973/74, has leisure time for rowing at the Königslake, near Berchtesgaden (Bavaria) where she lives.  The 17 year old blonde girl, slalom star of the German national ski team, is even in summer busy, first of all with the training for the winter and then as a seller in a sportshop in her home town.  1974 press photo

On the Snow: Camouflage

army surplus jacket for skiing

There is a lot of buzz lately about the camouflage “trend”.  Agreed, camo is everywhere – from Valentino’s Spring 2013 fashion collection to utilitarian L.L. Bean Hunter’s tote bags and nearly any other functional or frivolous product you could desire.  I see the pattern more as a standard and accept it as commonplace.

There is no shortage of camo on the slopes manufactured by ski, snowboard and outdoor gear brands.  But this guy caught my eye with his army surplus jacket appropriated for skiing and paired with technical pants.  The jacket looks right on him – and what he likely lacks in performance of sport-specific outerwear is balanced out in style with authenticity.

Don’t Jay Burke

burke_beardentrail

It was a good winter at Burke Mountain Resort:  early opening thanks to increased snowmaking, late closing due to high spring snowfall, in between a Burke Mountain Academy student became a world champion.  Personally, my husband and I made even more wonderful friends and fell more in love with the community.

I remain extremely guarded about the development hurtling towards Burke with its purchase by Jay Peak.  Yes, I know – progress, growth, security — these could and should be good things for locals and for guests, for ski and bike seasons.  I do get it and am admittedly looking forward to some of the updates.  But I can only hope change proceeds in appropriate scale and character, specific and authentic to what makes Burke. . . Burke.  This winter I have been very mindful to soak up the mountain’s rich atmosphere and personality before it all starts to evolve, in particular anticipating the construction site at the base of the Mid-Burke Express quad next winter.  There is irony, poignancy and comfort in the vintage image posted here.

A sincere thank you to everyone who keeps the ski and bike trails running and town amazingly pleasant and special!

FIS Alpine Ski World Championships, Schladming 2013: Women’s Slalom, Mikaela Shiffrin Wins!

Yes, there were other women in this slalom race but all I’m really caring about is Mikaela Shiffrin.  World Champion.  At seventeen.  Totally amazing (though not surprising) and completely awesome!

CONGRATULATIONS, Mikaela!

Skunkfunk Striped Jacket

01261©anapolitano2013x01262©anapolitano2013xskunkfunk_aimonePhoto:  Skunkfunk

This totally fresh jacket was a welcomed thrill on a bitter cold Northeast Kingdom day!  It is by Skunkfunk, a Spanish fashion brand specializing in sustainable stylish apparel.  The stripes and unique silhouette stopped me in my tracks but the oversized collar is the pièce de résistance.  Jenny Frutchy has been skiing her whole life and claims this to be her warmest jacket ever!
