JC de Castelbajac for Rossignol as seen at ISPO, January 2012.
I enjoyed watching this broadcasting duo at the Alpine World Championships in Schladming, Austria. Each day they would come dressed in exquisite complementary ensembles of luxury outerwear. The wild snow tiger theme shown here as they interview Julia Mancuso is by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac for Rossignol – styles I had seen the winter prior at the ISPO trade show but never expected to have the good fortune to see on snow!
Today, I finally became the very happy owner of a SKHOOP down skirt! SKHOOP is based in Åre, which makes this yet another great piece of wearable snow gear from Sweden. I will live in this skirt in cold months — more for casual wear than skiing, and it will be so nice post-ride for autumn mountain biking. I am stoked on this new acquisition and expect it is just the first step in building a little quiver of cozy insulated skirts.
Earlier in the winter, I posted about SKHOOP and Houdini skirts. The latest skirt discovery: Chixngravy. I spotted this fuchsia-skirted snowboarder zipping through a lift line at the Planai in Schladming. Chixngravy is a trendy line of snow, street and swim wear designed by Simone Ober and based in Kitzbühel, Austria. The snow skirt was the item that launched the brand “trying to combine fashion and function with passion and humor”. The very cool tomboy-styled skirts with cargo pockets are offered with and without insulation, taped seams and a unique snow cuff system. I am adding Chixngravy to my Austria shopping list!

I instantly fell for this fantastic tri-color skirt worn by Julia Mancuso after her runs in Schladming. The Swedish brand Houdini is responsible for this skirt named Sleepwalker. It is perfect to throw on over a speed suit — or more pedestrian garments such as base layer or ski pants.
By far, this is my favorite of the insulated skirts I have seen – the relaxed silhouette looks extra cozy and the styling is the hippest with a little more sass than all the others. Speaking of sass, Julia is never short on style and effortlessly owned this look.
Over the past several years, nearly everything I have found inspiring — and appealing to buy and wear myself – has been of Swedish design: Peak Performance, Hestra, Dr. Zipe and now Houdini. I like what I see and am excited to have a new apparel brand to follow. The Sleepwalker skirt is sold out this season – but will be on the top of my list next winter!
