Back to School!

Vintage photos of school children found in Innsbruck, Austria.
This is the week when summer ends, just a little bit too soon, regardless of calendar and weather — local schools are back in session. I have stacks of summer alpine images waiting to be shared and will try my best to work in a few more seasonal posts before it is undeniably autumn.

Women’s Olympic Downhill: It’s On!
In a setting of grandeur, pigtailed Cindy Nelson thrusts out over the downhill course on which she won a prized bronze medal for the U.S. From Sports Illustrated coverage of the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria.
Up late to watch the women’s downhill live from Sochi. Rooting for Julia Mancuso all the way! I think my dream podium would be: Mancuso gold, Maria Hoefl-Riesch silver, Anna Fenninger bronze. Lindsey Vonn will be missed, of course. Very, very sad for Tina Weirather, out with a leg injury incurred in training a few days ago – she deserves to continue her winning season.
Downhill Gold: Franz Klammer
The men’s downhill kicks off the alpine ski events of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. At the 1976 Innsbruck Winter Olympics, Franz Klammer of Austria cemented himself as a ski legend with his relentless, even reckless, charge to gold. Like Klammer, Bode Miller of Team USA will be racing to win wearing bib #15 – here’s hoping for the same result!

Snow Day: Snow Fort
Today I woke up to 10” of fresh snow and the governor requesting people to stay off the roads. That meant no school for my teacher husband, no office for me.
Last week in Innsbruck, Austria, I found these very sweet vintage photos of schoolgirls building a snow fort – perfect for the spirit of this mid-week snow day!

Mountain Recovery: British Eagle Airlines Flight 802
3/2/1964 Press Photo: 83 DIE IN MOUNTAIN AIR DISASTER. 75 passengers bound for a ski-ing holiday, and the crew of eight, all British, died when their Britannia aircraft of British Eagle International Airlines crashed on to the side of the Glungezer Mountain in the Austrian Alps, as it was approaching INNSBRUCK Airport. After the aircraft had disappeared, fog and snow held up the search, and it was several hours before the wreck was found. PHOTO SHOWS: 31-year-old HANNES GASSER (left) the best mountain guide in the district, stands by waiting for news of the location of the wrecked Britannia, beside an Austrian Army vehicle.
For someone who is about to embark on a search for plane crash victims of the worst aviation disaster in Austria’s history, this guide seems disturbingly happy – but let’s focus on his ensemble that is classic alpine perfection, right down to the edelweiss pin! The soldier’s camouflage jacket with gathered bottom hem is pretty fantastic, too — and would be perfectly on trend today with the current camo moment in fashion.
(The setting of this post is a pretty big downer but I am finding it interesting – in terms of history and the reinforcement of the vast scale and power of mountains. Read the Wikipedia post for more info about the crash and ensuing avalanche. Watch video footage of the wreckage, please note some content is graphic.)
