Ski Canada: Mt. Norquay, Banff
Ski tow on Mt. Norquay – Banff Photo: Canadian Pacific
After exciting action on the new and challenging Raptor course in Beaver Creek, Colorado, women’s FIS World Cup alpine ski racing has moved north to Lake Louise, Canada. If the weather cooperates, there will be training runs to monitor today and tomorrow. Fingers crossed that Lindsey Vonn is able to safely return to competition and the rest of the U.S. women’s speed team regains their winning form of last winter.
The men have traded places and are now in Beaver Creek waiting for the snow to stop to train on the demanding Birds of Prey course. Three races will be televised this weekend on NBC – such a treat in this country to have ski racing on a major network. Tune it and enjoy!

Schladming 2013: FIS Alpine Ski World Championships
Schladming, Austria is host to the 2013 FIS Alpine World Championships. Located in Styria in the heart of the country, this event is being called the Ski Festival with Heart. The ebullient mood seems to be equal parts Austrian national ski pride and regional culture.
I am arriving a few days in, after both Super G races — missing the drama of Lindsey Vonn’s season-ending crash, as well as the excitement of Ted Ligety’s gold medal in his first-ever Super G win! So for the next couple weeks, AlpineStyle56 will feature an extra big dose of ski racing action and inspiration. . .
Medals will be awarded for eleven events over fourteen days.
Schladming, with neighboring Haus/Ennstal, hosted the Alpine World Championships once before in 1982.
All races will be held on two slopes with a combined finish arena.
The voestalpine skygate, a stunning 35 meter high steel arch, adds to the drama of the finish.

U.S. Women’s Alpine Ski Team Uniforms

Laurenne Ross adding style with a pretty neck gaiter and gloves.
It is all about the pink polka dot jackets! The vibrant color has moxie – it is both sweet and bold; the subtle pattern is enough but not too much; the silhouette is cozy and relaxed yet flattering, perfect over speed suits.
The U.S. uniforms appear to have a broad range of garments and looks within the annual kit, and are creatively reimagined year-to-year, not bound to traditional red/ white/ blue Americana. As a designer, I would be interested to learn about the inspiration and athlete input that determines the creative direction, as well as see how all the pieces merchandise into a cohesive uniform system.
