Yes, there were other women in this slalom race but all I’m really caring about is Mikaela Shiffrin. World Champion. At seventeen. Totally amazing (though not surprising) and completely awesome!

What a pleasant surprise to open up the new Outside magazine and find a piece on Mikaela Shiffrin. The article is a nice primer on the ski racing phenom I call Magic Girl. The gorgeous photos by Chloe Crespi were shot near Burke Mountain Academy in East Burke, Vermont.

The First Post: J3 Junior Olympics – Sunday River, Maine
Seriously, how rad is this coach! Her day on the hill involves wielding power tools, lugging gates and fencing, working with athletes – all while skiing. And despite having a radio, Gerber knife and holster strapped to her — she still managed to accessorize and put together a personalized and inspired ensemble.
Also of note from this event, I watched wunderkind Mikaela Shiffrin win the Slalom – I now call her “Magic Girl”. It is going to be very fun to watch her career. . .
