NCAA Skiing Championships
The 2014 NCAA Skiing Championships begin today and run through Saturday. Hosted by the University of Utah Utes, alpine events will be held at Park City Mountain Resort and nordic races at Soldier Hollow Resort. Will the University of Colorado Buffaloes defend their 2013 championship? Will the University of Vermont Catamounts extend their undefeated streak?
To follow, found vintage photos of a collegiate theme, from a tough-as-nails coach to winter carnival races.
DENVER’S DRILLMASTER The menacing figure above, glowering in a perfectionist’s displeasure at the nation’s finest college ski team, is Willy Schaeffler, who is probably more things to more people than anyone else in the ski world. To the racers on his University of Denver ski teams, which long ago captured dominance of intercollegiate skiing from Dartmouth, he is a driving tutor and a merciless conditioner. From The Book of American Skiing by Ezra Bowen, 1963
1956 Press Photo: Pete Kirby, senior from Quebec, Canada, will captain Dartmouth’s ski team which will bid for the National Collegiate championship at Winter Park this weekend. Kirby and his Indian mates have rolled up a 4-0 record this year to lead eastern teams. He competes in the downhill and slalom events.

1/9/1938 AP Photo: OF AN OLD SKI FAMILY Miss Elizabeth Durrance is a member of the famous skiing family. A freshman at Skidmore College at Saratoga, N.Y. she won the women’s slalom event at the school’s winter carnival Jan. 8. Pretty, too.
