Sochi 2014: Jumping into History
Johanne Kolstad and Hilda “Nusse” Braskeruds of Norway, pioneers of women’s ski jumping in the 1930s.
Kolstad (left) toured the U.S. for five years in the mid-1930’s jumping at exhibitions. She was popular with fans and known as The Queen of Skis (or Skies) or The Wonder Girl. Her 1938 world record jump of 72 meters at Berlin, New Hampshire remained unbroken until 1972.

Finally! It seems crazy that this is a landmark in 2014 – but given that gender inequality has plagued ski jumping at the Olympic level – there is reason for celebration with the Sochi Winter Games. The U.S. Women’s team — lead by World Champion Lindsey Van, Sarah Hendrickson and Jessica Jerome – has tirelessly fought for the inclusion of women’s ski jumping in the Olympics. Tuesday, that became a reality.

Ski Legend: Andrea Mead Lawrence
January 27, 1952 Press Photo: THE WINNER RELAXES – Andrea Mead Lawrence of Rutland, Vt., is shown taking things easy after posting another victory in a tuneup ski match for the Olympics. The famed woman skier removes her goggles after winning the giant slalom at Bad Gastein, Austria. She competed against the top women skiers from six nations.
Contrary to the description in the photo caption, I do not think Andrea Mead Lawrence is “taking things easy” — all I see is the look of the fiercely intense competitor. Just weeks later, she went on to win two gold medals at the Winter Games in Oslo, Norway – the first and only American to win twice in a single Olympics.
It goes without saying that Andrea’s confidence brought the gorgeous US Ski Team uniform to life with mad style (and a remarkably tiny waist). And let’s not forget the race sponsor, Pez – of candy dispenser fame – is an Austrian brand founded in Vienna.

Of all the things I collect, archive and otherwise save, how I haven’t kept Patagonia catalogs for the last few decades is inexplicable. Finally, a few years ago I started a file for the covers. This year’s holiday catalog is one of my all-time favorites. Shot in Norway by Lars Schneider, this dogsled cover image led me to the Schneider Outdoor Visions web site, deep in gorgeous portfolio photos and rich in engaging blog posts and compelling short films.
I love how one thing leads to another and am very happy to have become acquainted with the work of Lars and Katrin Schneider. The German duo based near Hamburg, Germany travels the world, often as a family with their infant son, to capture outdoor sport, adventure and the natural world at the most inspiring and beautiful. Lots to check out and follow at outdoor-visions.com.
Last Look: 2013 National Team Uniforms
NORWAY: Aksel Lund Svindal filling out his vibrant yellow speed suit and clean white and black outerwear by Phenix.
UNITED STATES: Julia Mancuso in black, Laurenne Ross in vivid green, uniforms by Spyder. The green was kind of fun but I am hoping new uniforms have a more patriotic look. I do have to give the USST and Spyder a nod for infusing inherently uptight uniforms with a sense of relaxed American mountain lifestyle.
GERMANY: Maria Hoefl-Riesch wears Bogner vivid pink outerwear and the snow tiger suit which is a long-standing tradition for the team.
ITALY, ARGENTINA: Bold letters in black and white clearly identify these teams in uniforms by Kappa. Nadia Fanchini of Italy at left. I quite like the graphic impact and utility of this strong look, especially Argentina’s stylized execution.
SLOVENIA: It’s a good thing World Champion Tina Maze carries herself with such presence because this uniform by Halti is a lot to pull off.
AUSTRIA: Anna Fenninger in bright blue, Michaela Kirchgasser in white, outerwear by Schöffel. The Austrian kit, like the team itself, is very strong and a contender for the best – distinctive and refined, powerful and wearable colors, complementary variety, consistent interesting themes and details, well merchandised and executed. The back of the blue jacket is emblazoned with the claim Power Team, true enough!
Puffy Jackets: Hannes Reichelt of Team Austria in black Schöffel. Bogner male and female versions of team insulated outerwear; Maria Hoefl-Riesch again in pink.
With the Sölden FIS World Cup ski races kicking off the new season in just a few days, here is one last peek at some national team uniforms from 2013. I am always curious to see if and how much teams change their kits year to year. From early season training photos, I have seen a little new but much of the same from last season. With 2014 being an Olympic year, there will be no shortage of new uniforms to be revealed!

Ski Legend: Alf Engen
1/19/1936 Press Photo: Alf Engen, winner of the thirtieth annual ski meet of the Norge Ski Club held at Fox River Grove, Ill. He set a new hill record of one hundred and ninety four feet, 11 ft. over the existing hill mark which was made by Kaare Walberg, member of the Olympic team in 1932.
Alf Engen came from Norway to the United States in 1929. He dominated ski jumping competition in the 1930’s and 1940’s and was a pioneer of alpine skiing as well, focusing on powder skiing technique. The ski champion went on to become instrumental in the design and development of the quintessential American ski resorts of Alta, Utah, Sun Valley, Idaho and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He ran the ski school at Alf Engen Ski School Alta until 1989 and passed away in 1997. Engen is a true ski legend and his enormous contribution to skiing in this country is commemorated by the Alf Engen Ski Museum in Park City, Utah.

Ski NYC: Central Park
11/25/1938 Press Photo: NEW YORK – The near-blizzard which struck the city on Thanksgiving Day brought joy to the hearts of many winter sports enthusiasts. But to Tomon Murstad, reputed Norwegian ski jumper, it gave ample opportunity to practice some of his stunts on snow covered slopes of Central Park.
1/14/1939 Press Photo: SKIING IN NEW YORK’S CENTRAL PARK, New York City – A view in Central Park, Jan. 14 as ski enthusiasts took advantage of season’s heaviest snowfall in the metropolitan area. In the background can be seen some of the Manhattan skyscrapers that border the park.
I am in New York City for a couple days of meetings. With the August heat of the streets outside and recycled air inside — it is very fun to imagine a city experience of snow and skiing!
