Mother’s Day: Give Mom a Break
This image is of a very tiny vintage snapshot from Saalbach, Austria in 1938. I did not realize until I scanned and enlarged it – that it is an amusingly realistic (and timeless) capture. Unlike the idyllic happy poses generally feigned for photos – you see that Mom is all done with her sons’ nonsense! I am not a mother but imagine I, too, would often have this look on my face. Anyway, this revelation made me laugh. Be extra nice to your mom today!

On the Road: Instagram
Way too much to post on this blog and way too little time! Not only am I backlogged with news from winter 2014, I am traveling for the next two weeks and expect to have an influx of inspiration to share from Austria and Germany – even despite the utter lack of snow in these parts. My blogging may be lagging but fortunately my ‘gramming is not. Please follow AlpineStyle56 on Instagram or monitor the feed on the right sidebar of the blog homepage for new images and frequent updates. (Clicking an image in the Instagram blog feed will bring it to full size.) Go check right now! Several updates from Salzburg, Austria. . .
The Hohensalzburg fortress stands guard over the city – and medieval horse pond, Kapitelschwemme.
Traditional leather work with hirsch motif hand-crafted in Salzburg, perhaps in the style of a game bag.
Hermès boutique placard in the tradition of Salzburg’s elaborate wrought iron shop signs. Gargoyle lurking.
Blasting off with Moncler and. . . a jet pack? (Based on the success of their recent IPO, Moncler will likely soon be going even bigger.) Serious black and white color palette ruling the shop.
Certainly a leading name in traditional alpine dress. Lanz is home in Salzburg. (Note to self: research Lanz’s heritage and contribution to trachten beyond flannel pajamas!)
Salzburg: The Sound of Music
I am curious and a little excited to watch the remake of the The Sound of Music tonight on NBC. Traditionalists can balk all they want but Carrie Underwood certainly has the pipes to fill Maria’s dirndl.
Sadly, this new production will not be filmed on location in and about Salzburg and the Austrian Alps as was the 1965 movie. When in Salzburg, you can’t help but stumble through sites used in the movie. I hadn’t seen the film since childhood and after watching it a couple years ago – was stunned to see how much of the movie could be found in my travel photos.
Nonnberg Abbey, the convent from which Maria is released and famously begins her dancing and singing journey to the Von Trapp family residence.
Maria sings her namesake song, Maria, together with the nuns at this Benedictine monastery perched on a hill in Salzburg’s Old Town.
Heading south, view of Untersberg. An escape scene shows the family on the summit of this 6,473 foot peak.
Frohnburg Castle posed as the exterior of the Trapp family mansion and is where Maria concludes the song I Have Confidence.
The festive Christkindlmarkt – Christmas market – at Schloss Hellbrunn. The baroque palace was built in 1613-19 as a summer residence; the trick fountains are a popular tourist attraction.
Hellbrunn Palace is also where the pavilion, made famous by two scenes in the movie, is now stationed. Sixteen Goin’ On Seventeen and Something Good were both performed in this glass pavilion.
View of Festung Hohensalzburg on the return to the historic altstadt from Hellbrunn Palace. The medieval fortress provides a distinctive backdrop and skyline for Salzburg.
A statue by Ottavio Mosto (1690) in the gardens at Mirabell Palace. Several scenes were filmed here, perhaps most notably Do-Re-Mi by Maria and the Von Trapp children.
Maria and the children stroll by the horse statue and murals of the Pferdeschwemme Fountain – an ancient horse bath – as part of My Favorite Things musical sequence.
Christmas market in Residenzplatz – this square is featured early in the film when Maria sings I Have Confidence.
Moncler Polka Dots
I have a bit of an addiction to Moncler down, so I just about had a heart attack when I came upon this jacket in the window at Dantendorfer Salzburg. The playful and graphic polka dot pattern is the first thrill; the back peplum hem and intricate sleeve cuff detail take this to a whole other level.
The more low-key Haruka vest is truly more my speed and I would love to add it to my collection.

After watching Mikaela Shiffrin win the world slalom title in Schladming, I headed to Salzburg to catch my flight home the next morning. Salzburg is one of my favorite places, so I am always happy for an evening stroll around the altstadt to check out the lovely store windows full of alpine inspiration.
