Kandahar-Rennen: World Cup at Garmisch
This is the second consecutive weekend of FIS World Cup ski races at Garmisch-Partenkirchen with the women racing downhill today and SG tomorrow. The finish area may have changed but the course remains a legend. Click here and look for History to learn more about the Kandahar race.
The 2015 race brochure gives a heavy nod to the heritage of this Bavarian ski tradition. Susanne Riesch is the featured female racer. Can anyone identify the male racer?

Vintage photos of school children found in Innsbruck, Austria.
This is the week when summer ends, just a little bit too soon, regardless of calendar and weather — local schools are back in session. I have stacks of summer alpine images waiting to be shared and will try my best to work in a few more seasonal posts before it is undeniably autumn.

Tracht: Original Alpine Style
Family portrait found in an antique picture frame.
Vintage postcard featuring a family from the Stubaital region of Tirol, Austria.
The funicular in the background could be a good clue to location.
Is this a wedding photo? Or just a portrait of an affluent couple? From Bad Aussee in the Styria region of Austria.
Traditional costume characteristic of mountainous Bavaria and Tyrol often serves as the iconic foundation for contemporary alpine-specific style and is responsible for endless beloved motifs. Tracht signifies region (such as Berchtesgaden), community (most often rural), economic standing and occasion (holiday, mourning). I remain in awe of the artistic nature and exquisite handicraft involved in this garb.
Most of these images are found vintage photos – I would love to know country and region of origin. If anyone has knowledge of this topic – please share with a comment.
