The Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships kicked off today in Vail, Colorado.  After 30 years, the Open has left its Vermont roots, trading Stratton for the larger venue of Vail.  I suppose it represents progress for the sport, but am sad to see the event leave the state where it was born and cultivated.

Needless to say, Vermont is steeped in snowboard heritage and has produced more than its fair share of world-class riders.  In honor of the state’s role in snowboard history and culture, here is my favorite image of my favorite Vermont rider, Betsy Shaw:  many time US Open competitor, World Champion, Olympian, all-around hero.
