US Open Exits Vermont for Colorado
Scanned Photo: Transworld Snowboarding, 1997
The Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships kicked off today in Vail, Colorado. After 30 years, the Open has left its Vermont roots, trading Stratton for the larger venue of Vail. I suppose it represents progress for the sport, but am sad to see the event leave the state where it was born and cultivated.
Needless to say, Vermont is steeped in snowboard heritage and has produced more than its fair share of world-class riders. In honor of the state’s role in snowboard history and culture, here is my favorite image of my favorite Vermont rider, Betsy Shaw: many time US Open competitor, World Champion, Olympian, all-around hero.

Gretchen Bleiler took 3rd in Women’s Halfpipe with style wearing pieces from her signature Oakley GB Collection.
Burton did a pretty fantastic job with the tie-dye event jackets. Tricia Byrnes does a fantastic job at everything she does, which is a lot, including winning this shindig when she was 17! (I’m coveting her stack of old-school lift tickets from Mt. Baker.)
Soko Yamaoka of Japan finished 4th in winning pants.
Hannah Teter happy with 2nd place.
xBurton’s JG, always the innovator, with his latest board design. Nug: Cultivated by JG and Friends
xxxLove this super-clean anorak.
xxNike Snowboarding vest-over-jacket combo. Starting to see more vests as outerwear. . .
