The 2014 NCAA Skiing Championships begin today and run through Saturday. Hosted by the University of Utah Utes, alpine events will be held at Park City Mountain Resort and nordic races at Soldier Hollow Resort. Will the University of Colorado Buffaloes defend their 2013 championship? Will the University of Vermont Catamounts extend their undefeated streak?
To follow, found vintage photos of a collegiate theme, from a tough-as-nails coach to winter carnival races.
DENVER’S DRILLMASTER The menacing figure above, glowering in a perfectionist’s displeasure at the nation’s finest college ski team, is Willy Schaeffler, who is probably more things to more people than anyone else in the ski world. To the racers on his University of Denver ski teams, which long ago captured dominance of intercollegiate skiing from Dartmouth, he is a driving tutor and a merciless conditioner. From The Book of American Skiing by Ezra Bowen, 1963
1956 Press Photo: Pete Kirby, senior from Quebec, Canada, will captain Dartmouth’s ski team which will bid for the National Collegiate championship at Winter Park this weekend. Kirby and his Indian mates have rolled up a 4-0 record this year to lead eastern teams. He competes in the downhill and slalom events.

1/9/1938 AP Photo: OF AN OLD SKI FAMILY Miss Elizabeth Durrance is a member of the famous skiing family. A freshman at Skidmore College at Saratoga, N.Y. she won the women’s slalom event at the school’s winter carnival Jan. 8. Pretty, too.

ALPINE WINNERS: In Alta, Utah – Chick Igaya (left), 28-year-old Olympic skier from Japan, and 16-year-old Jimmy Heuga of Tahoe City, Calif., beam after taking turns placing first and second in the giant slalom and slalom at the national alpine ski championships. Igaya, former Dartmouth University star, won the giant slalom, Heuga second. Heuga won the slalom, with Igaya second.
My favorite example of outerwear customization: Kaylin Richardson’s star pants! Kaylin confirmed the star came to be out of necessity, a patch to cover a hole in the knee. It is a brilliant fix – doesn’t look like a repair, rather a stylish little detail that emphasizes her stoked style.

1/2/1968 Press Photo – Olympic ski champion Stein Eriksen is director of the Snowmass-at-Aspen ski school. Eriksen’s instruction includes a pre-slope classroom course of lectures and films to “let the beginner know that experts fall.”
After being in Deer Valley, Utah – home of Stein Eriksen Lodge – a little vintage inspiration is in order!
