Winter Carnival: Dartmouth
2/20/1953 Press Photo: This trio of crack Dartmouth skiers led a field of 38 from nine colleges to give the Indians an early lead today at Middlebury, Vt. in the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association’s championships. Left to right: Ralph Miller of Hanover, N.H.; Bill Tibbits, North River, N.Y., and Brooks Dodge, Gorham, N.H.
The legendary Dartmouth Winter Carnival is underway this weekend with EISA / NCAA alpine and nordic ski races headlining the schedule of events. After day one, the University of Vermont Catamounts are in the top spot, Dartmouth in second, University of New Hampshire in third.
This history and lore of the Dartmouth Winter Carnival lives on in a vibrant collection of event posters. Highly revered and collectible, original posters are increasingly rare and demand a premium at auctions such as Christie’s and Swann Galleries annual poster sales. Click here to view an archive of Winter Carnival poster images from the Dartmouth College Library Collections.

UVM Outing Club: 100 Years
If you are one of those people who love the great out-of-doors; if you like to get away now and then from the gods of the valleys and come in touch with the gods of the hills; if you like to feel the freedom that comes when canoe cuts the waters of lake and river; if you enjoy the keen exhilarating pleasure that is born of the ski and snow-shoe trail, you will begin to understand the motives which lie behind the Out-O’-Doors Club of the University of Vermont. – Roderic Marble Olzendam, founder of the UVM Outing Club
The University of Vermont is my alma mater. Proximity to skiing played a disproportionate role in why I chose to attend the school. And I did take advantage of the scenario, skiing Sugarbush early on and then switching to Stowe, with a bit of night racing at Bolton Valley. A love of the outdoors, the associated culture and sub-cultures unite the university more than any other measure, I dare say.
After collecting months’ worth of random mail that still accumulates at my parents’ address, I flipped through the Fall 2013 issue of Vermont Quarterly to find a feature about the centennial anniversary of the UVM Outing Club. I love the illustrations by Ross MacDonald and certainly the ardent quote by the man who founded the club in 1913, Roderic Marble Olzendam. “Out into the free open country. . . “ written by Madison Gilmore can be read by clicking here.
Weekend Treasures
I hit a small local antique fair over the weekend and managed to score a few solid finds. It is a very big treasure hunting week with the final Brimfield show of 2013 starting today.
I try to keep my collection exclusively ski or winter images but this vintage bike photo is too good to have left behind.
Gorgeous Native American leather gloves with beadwork. Too pricey to buy but a happy reminder that in just a few months I will be skiing in my Astis mitts!
I can’t recall ever coming across any vintage memorabilia from University of Vermont, my alma mater. This 1950-60’s flocked pennant is a beauty with the badass Catamount mascot.
Real photo postcard of the Smuggler’s Notch T-Bar at Stowe, Vermont. I have been looking for this specific image to add to my Richardson collection! Photo by Harry Wendell Richardson of Newport, Vermont.
I love the vibrant color of vintage Photochrome postcards. This one was produced by the Union Pacific Railroad – such great composition.
