Happy Mother’s Day!
When your mom looks like a supermodel.
3/7/1951 Press Photo: Reno, Nevada – The kids come right along when mama goes out skiing here. Mrs Brownie Glover, out for a day’s sport on Mt. Rose near Reno, shows how she carries nine-month-old Linda along in a special papoose-style basket, which she designed herself. Two-year-old Robbie, is old enough to fend for himself on special pint-sized skis.
Somewhere in Europe, decades ago. . . a mother and daughter share skiing and the same expression.
Happy times! Winter vacation 1952 – Arosa, Switzerland

Stowe: Ski Racing Heritage
Ski racing runs deep in Stowe, Vermont. Every level of alpine racing has graced the slopes of Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak from international championships to the beloved Sugar Slalom. The Mount Mansfield Ski Club, the oldest ski club in the country, has assembled a detailed history and timeline of racing in Stowe. Please click here for the MMSC website.
3/17/1957 Press Photo: SAILER OF AUSTRIA WINS – Toni Sailer of Austria shown crossing the finish line here today as he won the men’s downhill event of the American-International Ski Races being held here on Mount Mansfield.
3/20/1955 Press Photo: STOWE, VT., DOWNHILL SKI CHAMPIONS – Buddy Werner, 19-year-old University of Denver freshman who won the International Downhill race down Mt. Mansfield today is flanked by tie winners of women’s race. Andrea Mead Lawrence, 22, (left) of Parshall, Col. U.S. double Olympic champion and Madeleine Berthod, 24, (right) of Switzerland tied at 2:08.7 for the 1.2 mile course. Werner topped American and European champions for time of 2:07.5 for 1¾ mile course.

Schneider is favored to win the Vic Constant Memorial Downhill, Slalom and Combined races this weekend (Jan. 17-18) at Mansfield. Ruschp is general manager and newly-named president of the Mount Mansfield ski resort and Fahrner is a former European champion skier.
1966 AP WIREPHOTO: STOWE, VT., MARCH 19 — FLYING FRENCHMAN – Jean-Claude Killy of France leans into a high speed turn as he flashes down Mount Mansfield to win International Giant Slalom championships at Stowe, Vt., today. Killy, gasping for air, is “stepping up” or shifting weight from right to left ski for turn towards next gate to his left. Killy ran course of just under a mile in 1:45:67.
2/15/1970 Press Photo: Val Gardena, Italy – Bill Kidd of Stowe, Vt., flying in air during today’s Alpine World Championships downhill event in which he placed fifth. He won the Combined Alpine trophy beating top favorite France’s Patrick Russel.
Certainly the most enduring and beloved ski race in Stowe is the annual Sugar Slalom. It is a celebration of spring complete with racers in spirited costumes and fresh maple syrup on snow. The 2014 edition of the Sugar Slalom is this weekend, April 5-6, with races running Saturday and Sunday on Spruce Peak’s Slalom Hill, pictured here many years ago. The Simple Anorak: When Less Is More

Spring skiing is here – or coming very soon – so it is time to lighten layers. The simple and clean anorak fits the bill. Fortunately, this classic style is experiencing a revival with contemporary versions increasingly available in the retail mix of lightweight, windbreaker jackets.

NCAA Skiing Championships
The 2014 NCAA Skiing Championships begin today and run through Saturday. Hosted by the University of Utah Utes, alpine events will be held at Park City Mountain Resort and nordic races at Soldier Hollow Resort. Will the University of Colorado Buffaloes defend their 2013 championship? Will the University of Vermont Catamounts extend their undefeated streak?
To follow, found vintage photos of a collegiate theme, from a tough-as-nails coach to winter carnival races.
DENVER’S DRILLMASTER The menacing figure above, glowering in a perfectionist’s displeasure at the nation’s finest college ski team, is Willy Schaeffler, who is probably more things to more people than anyone else in the ski world. To the racers on his University of Denver ski teams, which long ago captured dominance of intercollegiate skiing from Dartmouth, he is a driving tutor and a merciless conditioner. From The Book of American Skiing by Ezra Bowen, 1963
1956 Press Photo: Pete Kirby, senior from Quebec, Canada, will captain Dartmouth’s ski team which will bid for the National Collegiate championship at Winter Park this weekend. Kirby and his Indian mates have rolled up a 4-0 record this year to lead eastern teams. He competes in the downhill and slalom events.

TRAIL CREEK CABIN SUN VALLEY, IDAHO During the summer months Trail Creek Cabin is a popular place for horseback parties to take early morning breakfast. It is also the scene of picnic parties, steak fries and barbecues. In winter it is a favorite goal of bobsled parties for late supper, followed by dancing.
The handwritten note on this vintage postcard reads: July 1, 1952 Tuesday This is a very exciting place. There are things to do every minute. This afternoon we went for a swim in a beautiful pool, also went bike riding. Tonight there is dancing and ice skating. Tomorrow morning we’re going horse back riding. Love, Reeva

Vintage hotel luggage label: Sun Valley, Idaho America’s Foremost Year ‘Round Sports Center
I have lost my favorite East Coast ski buddies for a couple weeks to their vacation in Sun Valley, Idaho. So this post is a kind of reverse postcard to them. Greetings from home – hope you are having fun, sun and lots of bottomless turns!
Built by the Union Pacific Railroad and home to the world’s first chairlift (1936) – the role of this resort to ski development and heritage in the U.S. and abroad is beyond compare. I am not going to tackle any Sun Valley history or anecdotes at this time – so please let these vintage images tell some of the story.
St. Moritz: Skeleton
Olympic skeleton racing concludes today. I know nothing about the sport other than it looks both insane and incredibly cool. Last summer, I found this vintage photo — when else will I have a relevant occasion to share it!
Some cursory research informed me that St. Moritz, Switzerland is the birthplace of skeleton racing. The head-first position was first used in 1887, a variation on the established sports of bobsled, luge and Cresta sledding. Note the embossed Kulm St. Moritz, of the famous hotel integral to the history of this and apparently many other winter sports.

Skiing with Penguins: Les Gets, France
2/11/1977 Press Photos: PENGUIN SKIERS. . . It is holiday month for children in the winter sport area, and for those young enough and lucky enough from further afield to spend time learning to ski. In this special junior ski enclosure at Les Gets Penguins are supplied as a novelty and as tame pets. They seem to enjoy being with the children and showing off their paces. Some of the Penguins are even fitted with miniature skis and the Penguins’ race is one of the attractions. This young skier (top) is trying to encourage two sporting Penguins by offering them a tastey morsel of fish.
Downhill Gold: Franz Klammer
The men’s downhill kicks off the alpine ski events of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. At the 1976 Innsbruck Winter Olympics, Franz Klammer of Austria cemented himself as a ski legend with his relentless, even reckless, charge to gold. Like Klammer, Bode Miller of Team USA will be racing to win wearing bib #15 – here’s hoping for the same result!

Winter Carnival: Dartmouth
2/20/1953 Press Photo: This trio of crack Dartmouth skiers led a field of 38 from nine colleges to give the Indians an early lead today at Middlebury, Vt. in the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association’s championships. Left to right: Ralph Miller of Hanover, N.H.; Bill Tibbits, North River, N.Y., and Brooks Dodge, Gorham, N.H.
The legendary Dartmouth Winter Carnival is underway this weekend with EISA / NCAA alpine and nordic ski races headlining the schedule of events. After day one, the University of Vermont Catamounts are in the top spot, Dartmouth in second, University of New Hampshire in third.
This history and lore of the Dartmouth Winter Carnival lives on in a vibrant collection of event posters. Highly revered and collectible, original posters are increasingly rare and demand a premium at auctions such as Christie’s and Swann Galleries annual poster sales. Click here to view an archive of Winter Carnival poster images from the Dartmouth College Library Collections.
